PolyStyreneLoop BV shortlisted for prestigious Plastics Recycling Awards Europe
PolyStyreneLoop BV has been shortlisted for the prestigious Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2020 for “Product Technology Innovation of the Year – improving recyclable plastic products or incorporating recycled materials in product production”.
The award winners will be announced on March 26th, during the second day of the Plastics Recycling Show Europe, in RAI Amsterdam.
Jan Noordegraaf, Director and Founder: “This nomination is first of all a recognition for our PolyStyreneLoop team. A lot of hard work has been put in to realise the funding, to develop the technology and now to start building the plant. Simultaneously we are setting up a collection system in several European countries. With the realisation of our demonstration plant, we are the first ever cooperative model on a material level representing the entire polystyrene foam value chain. This proves that polystyrene foam is the most circular insulation material. Next to the already well-established recycling of short cycle packaging and construction cuts offs, we now also have a recycling solution for polystyrene foam from demolition and renovation of buildings. It is the first time in Europe that a 2-step solvent upcycling factory is realised. The CreaSolv® Process we use is a solvent-based purification technology, classified as physical recycling”.
Polystyrene Loop Coöperatief U.A. will build the plant as PolyStyreneLoop BV in Terneuzen, Netherlands. The company sets up a demonstration plant for recycling polystyrene foam construction waste (both EPS and XPS) containing the legacy chemical HBCD and (H)CFC’s. It will separate and destruct the obtained HBCD and will recycle and sell polystyrene beads (PS) compliant to the POP regulation described in the Basel Convention. The separated HBCD will be treated in the Bromine Recovery Unit (BRU) based at ICL, Terneuzen allowing the recovery of elemental bromine and the safe destruction of HBCD. Members of the cooperative will take the 100% recycled PS and will use it again in construction applications, as feedstock for extrusion of EPS beads, or via continuous XPS foaming.
Open to organisations and individuals across Europe who are involved in the recycling of plastic materials, the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe are organised jointly by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) and Crain Communications, organisers of the Plastics Recycling Show Europe.
